There are two stories behind the pattern and the yarn I chose for it. I got the book that holds this design -Knits for the Family- at Half Priced Books somewhere in Ohio, maybe two or three years ago now. I saw three knitting books there and I just had to get them. It was around this time that I was also transitioning from acrylic yarn to natural fibers, and focusing on creating things that were wearable. Unfortunately, as I don't have the book with me at this moment and a google search of the book name did not show the knitting book that I got, I do not have the name of the person who put together all of these patterns into this book. However, I did take photos of the pattern itself so I have the name and designer as listed above. This is the first sweater that I've made from the three books, though I have tried some and have plans to make some coats or sweaters in the future. The reason I got the yarn that I used for this project, was actually because I wanted to knit one of the more difficult cable knit sweaters in the same book. I tried to make it a couple years back and stopped because I didn't understand that I could just modify the pattern, which is what I did this time, and the pattern was significantly more difficult with different cable patterns along the body, back and arms of the sweater whereas this pattern is simpler. The one thing that impresses people (non-knitters) is cabling even though it is a simple process... so if you want to make something like this, just GET STARTED! But start with something simple first. Or don't. This project also requests yarn made of half alpaca and half wool, but naturally these knitting books and pretty old and I find that searching for a replacement yarn that matches the yarn size is good enough. Matching the fibers can also be useful if you want a closer match to the original product but being experimental and learning how to substutite discontinued yarn can also be a useful skill. I started this project on May 7th with a size Medium and then frogging it all... then started on May 18th but with a size small and I had other adjustments or modifications to the pattern such as making the arms and body length longer while keeping the same width. I finally finished it on June 29th! Its for my boyfriend :D |
